Saugeen Shores Fire Department says that no injuries were reported from a house fire on Gustavus Street in Port Elgin.
At around 6:15 Thursday morning, fire crews from Port Elgin and Southampton responded to a fire at Gustavus Street and Kaake Street.
When crews arrived, thick, black smoke was seen coming from the structure.
Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Ed Melanson says that the residents of the home were already awake and gone for the day when a fire broke out in the kitchen.
Melanson says that the damage caused by the blaze was severe, and is estimated to be around $250,000.
He says that the homeowners were rattled at the occurrence, but are relieved that crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly.
Melanson adds that as a reminder, it’s always a good idea to ensure there are working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
