As the Gallery's hometown of Owen Sound is named one of North America's 'Must Visit Hockey Towns', the Tom Thomson Art Gallery is thrilled to announce our latest original exhibition Saving Face: Art in Front of the Hockey Net. This exhibition runs from December 7, 2018 to March 30, 2019, honouring and celebrating the art of the goalie mask.

Join us on Friday December 7, 2018 from 6pm-9pm to celebrate the opening of this unique and community focused exhibition. Team players and goalies from Owen Sound's very own Attack and Cubby will be on hand to meet and greet visitors. We also encourage visitors to contribute to the exhibition through our Community Spirit Wall activity where you can design your own goalie mask on paper. Admission to this event is free.

More on Saving Face The Art of the Goalie Mask:
Teaming up with former NHL goaltender and hometown hockey hero Curtis Sanford, this exhibition features several painted goalie masks from Sanford’s career, along with those of other professional career players. Included are commercially designed masks, and models of masks through various stages of production, demonstrating the complexity of the airbrushing process. The show highlights the cutting-edge work of leading industry professionals including Vince Goodeve, Gerald McLaughlin of VOODOOAIR, and David Gunnarsson DAVEART.com to name a few.

Local artist Billy Goodkat will create a large-scale mural to celebrate the love of the game and to honour this iconic piece of sporting equipment.

Across from the mural, a Community Spirit Wall showcases the work of area youth who have taken a shot at designing their own goalie masks.

The Gallery gratefully acknowledges the generous support from operational funders, sponsors, members, and donors it has received to make this large community focused exhibition possible. Thank you to the Gallery's Presenting Exhibition Sponsor McArthur Tire, the Gallery's Community Partners and Exhibition Supporters Owen Sound Attack, Sunbelt Rentals, Cobble Beach, Voodoo Airbrushing, HAVE1.COM, and all goalie mask lenders including Geoff Couture, Vince Goodeve, Gary Kurt, Curtis Sanford, Steve Silverthorn, and Gerald McLaughlin.
