Reducing The Risk Of Violence In Hospitals

Hanover | by Robyn Garvey

Last year 808 Ontario health care workers missed work due to workplace violence.

The Ministry of Labour has been busy visiting the Hanover and District Hospital, South Bruce Grey Health Centre and Grey Bruce Health Services over the last few weeks.

It’s all part of a Ministry of Labour blitz involving visits to every hospital in Ontario to review their workplace violence and harassment programs.

The visits are a proactive move in response to a concerning rise in health care violence incidents across Ontario.

Last year alone, 808 Ontario health care workers missed work due to workplace violence.

In fact health care ranked the 2nd highest sector with workplace violence lost time injury claims.

Risk Manager and Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator Cheryl Speer says the Hanover and District Hospital welcomed the Ministry visit saying the hospital is always eager to receive suggestions on how they can make their workplace as safe as possible.

In Hanover, she says the Hospital has gone to great lengths to protect staff from workplace violence.

This includes specialized training on self-defence moves for front line staff workers like nurses, personalized as well as general alarm systems for employees and specific protocols to take when treating a violent or potentially violent patient.

As an added precaution, the Hanover Hospital now contracts a security service when staff have identified a patient that requires constant or enhanced observation.

This is a new initiative for the hospital.

Speer says the Hanover Hospital is not large enough to have its own security staff, by contracting the service she says the Hospital is able to provide staff with extra security when treating a violent or unstable patient.

Because hospitals deal with a wide range of health and mental health needs, Speer says workplace violence is very real issue and concern.

Vice President of Human Resources Stacey Hogg adds the Hanover and District Hospital has worked hard to ensure its employees and its patients are safe.

The Ministry of Labour province wide workplace violence and harassment program hospital visit blitz wraps up this month.
