Guy Paul Morin, who was wrongfully convicted of killing Christine Jessop before being exonerated in 1995, says he’s “relieved” for the Jessop family after police used DNA evidence to reveal the identity of her real killer.
In a statement released through his lawyer yesterday, Morin said “I am relieved for Christine’s mother, Janet, and her family, and hope this will give them some peace of mind. They have been through a dreadful ordeal for 36 years since they lost Christine in 1984.”
Police announced yesterday that DNA evidence found on Jessop’s body 35 years ago was recently matched to Toronto resident Calvin Hoover, who was 28 at the time Jessop’s death.
However, police say Hoover died in 2015.
Christine Jessop was abducted after leaving her home in Queensville on Oct. 3, 1984 and the 9 year old’s body was discovered nearly three months later.
Guy Paul Morin, Jessop’s neighbour, was arrested and wrongfully convicted of her murder.
He was acquitted in 1995 after new DNA evidence emerged exonerating him as the killer.
The Ontario government apologized to Morin for his prosecution and paid him $1.25 million in compensation.
