Part of the stage at the Roxy Theatre in downtown Owen Sound is undergoing restoration work after it suffered water damage.
Roxy Theatre Executive Director Marcia Cunningham says they’re still trying to figure out exactly what occurred, but there was a lot of water discovered on the stage of the theatre Thursday morning.
“There was water pouring off the stage and into the auditorium, and I understand it was up to the third or fourth aisle,” Cunningham explains.
Just outside of the Roxy Theatre on Thursday morning, crews were working to fix a watermain repair on 9th Street East. The city had closed the street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues East for several hours for the work.
However, Cunningham says they are not sure at this time how the water in the Roxy is related to what was happening outside.
“We’re still trying to figure out exactly what occurred,” she says.
Cunningham says remediation and restoration works are underway to clean up the water in the Roxy Theatre and get the stage re-organized. The top layer of wood on the stage has been removed to allow what’s beneath it to air out. She expects the floor of the stage will be replaced.
The estimated cost of the damage is unknown at this point. Cunningham expects the theatre will make an insurance claim.
The Roxy Theatre is currently closed due to Covid restrictions. This summer, the Owen Sound Little Theatre is planning an outdoor production at Kelso Beach Park.
