It’s quiet there right now because of Covid but seniors belonging to the Chantry Centre on Grey Street in Southampton are getting ready to party.
President of the Centre Connie Barker was before Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole on June 14th to let councillors know the facility is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Barker says the mandate of the centre is to create a place where all seniors, 50 years of age and older, are welcome to come and enjoy and learn new things, in an environment of comradery.
It’s programing created by the seniors for the seniors and don’t even think about stereotyping the group of over 100 members.
They have received help from the United Way for a laptop and tablets and they’ve worked with Arturas Zuta from Innovation Catalyst, Nuclear Promise X where their team has set up all the units with games, emails, communication programs and will be running training programs for the seniors in the near future to teach them how to use them.
In addition 10 businesses in Southampton have made generous donations to enable the group to purchase picnic tables and they are planning some outdoor activities this summer.
Once they get clearance, the first thing though, will be the 30th anniversary celebration with plenty of food and refreshments.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau indicated council will be there whenever the date may be.
