Over $2,800 has been raised by military recruits in Meaford for Soldier On.
Soldier On is a Canadian Armed Forces program which contributes to the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and veterans in providing opportunities and resources through sport, recreation and creative activities.
A release notes the fundraising started in mid-June when Master Corporal Daniel Fraser realized his shaggy hair needed a cut, which led to a fundraising idea.
“I was sitting in the office talking to some of the other course staff mostly joking around about collecting donations to allow the recruits to shave my hair off,” says Fraser.
When his platoon encouraged Fraser, he reached out to Jamie Macintyre, a combat veteran turned employee as Soldier On’s Regional Coordinator to set up a fundraising campaign at the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre in Meaford.
“I basically told the course about Soldier On at an orders group, that if they raised enough money, the recruits could shave my hair off. My hope at that time was that the recruits would fundraise something around $300,” says Fraser. “But what actually occurred exceeded everyone’s expectations by far.”
Private Recruit Chase Comeau explained they donated what they could from their pockets and over the course of a few hours, they were able to collect $2,875.
