Meaford is applying for a grant to help finance a watermain replacement project.
Council resolved at its meeting on Monday to submit an application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program Green Stream for the $1.81-million Lakeshore Road and Algonquin Drive watermain replacement.
If successful, the grant would cover more than $864,000 of the estimated total cost for the project.
Projects approved for Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program Green Stream dollars have 40 per cent of eligible costs financed by the federal government, 33.33 per cent by the province and 26.67 per cent by the municipality.
The Lakeshore Road and Algonquin Drive work will see about 900 metres of watermain replaced.
According to a report by Meaford Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Development Services Rob Armstrong, existing water system users would need to fund the entire cost if Meaford does not get approved for the grant.
It’s expected Meaford will receive notification about the status of the application by spring 2022.
Armstrong’s report says the proposed project is included in Meaford’s 10-year water financial plan, with construction expected to begin in 2023.
