The Kelly Graham Legacy Award has been granted to three local organizations that offer programs to advance the health and well-being of young women in the region.
The Community Foundation Grey Bruce says the Kelly Graham Legacy Endowed Fund was created in 2020 to support women in the community.
Foundation Executive Director Stuart Reid says, “It invites local charities and non-profits to put forward programs for support related to health and well-being, and women and girls, and also job preparedness and professional development, any aspect of well-being that they might come across.”
The award was granted to Big Brothers Big Sisters Kincardine and District, Launch Pad Youth Activity and Technology Centre, and Ledge Leadership.
The Community Foundation says Big Brothers Big Sisters want to offer the program “Go Girls!” It is a healthy body and healthy mind program for girls between the ages of 12 and 14.
Executive Director Yolanda Ritsema says, “this is a pilot project for our BBBS. The pandemic has created some unique challenges for girls that are coming of age in a time where healthy in person communication has been limited. This seven-week program hopes to change that.”
Launch Pad Youth Activity and Technology Centre is going to use its grant money to launch a program titled, “Into to Automotive Project for Girls and Non-Binary Youth.” The community Foundation says this program offers a safe, judgement free space to learn skills, including basic car maintenance and how vehicles run.
Executive Director Nicholas Manglal-Ian says, “once girls have the basics, then confidence to join more advanced and integrated classes comes easier.”
Ledge Leadership in Clarksburg, says the Community Foundation, is going to run its new project, “Beyond High School.” This program gives students the skills they need to live on their own.
Program Coordinator Melri Wright says, “preparing meals and eating together, budgeting your personal finances, managing your health … we’re giving young women these building blocks, along with the Highlands assessment of natural abilities and it’s empowering.”
Community Foundation Grey Bruce Grants and Donor Relations Coordinator Jen Legge says they are thrilled in offering the Kelly Graham Legacy Award.
“We hope that every spring local non-profits with programs supporting girls and women will apply through our website,” says Legge.
Details on the grant can be found on the Community Foundation Grey Bruce website.
