Voters in Bruce and Grey counties now have a clear picture of those vying for local mayoral and council positions in the upcoming fall municipal elections.
And in some cases, who their next mayor and councillors will be.
The nomination period for the Oct. 24 municipal and school board elections closed this past Friday, Aug. 19, and most municipalities have since certified their final lists of candidates.
In Owen Sound, John Tamming is the lone sitting councillor not seeking re-election. However, there will still be some inevitable change at the council table as some long-time councillors have entered the mayor and deputy mayor races.
Two-term incumbent mayor Ian Boddy is being challenged by Richard Thomas, a two-term city councillor. While the deputy mayor position will be contested by incumbent Brian O’Leary and two-term councillor Scott Greig.
Three sitting mayors in the region will be returning for another term after being the only candidates to file. Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau, Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody and Arran-Elderslie Mayor Steve Hammell are all being acclaimed.
There are a number of other deputy mayor and councillor positions across Grey Bruce that will be filled without voters weighing in.
The deputy mayors of Georgian Bluffs (Grant Pringle), Meaford (Shirley Keaveney), The Blue Mountains (Peter Bordignon) and Brockton (James Lang) are all being acclaimed.
In Chatsworth, only three people filed to run for the three council seats: Peter James Whitten will join incumbents Shawn Greig and Elizabeth Thompson at the table next term.
Three incumbents will also return to their seats unopposed in Saugeen Shores. Vice-Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt, and Southampton wards councillors John Divinski and Cheryl Grace will be back at the council table in the town.
In South Bruce, Audrey Bross and Jeff Goetz are being acclaimed as Mildmay-Carrick ward councillors. And in Arran-Elderslie, there’s also two ward councillors being acclaimed: Darryl Hampton (Chesley) and Moiken Penner (Paisley).
Incumbent mayors in all but four municipalities in the region are seeking re-election. Meaford Mayor Barb Clumpus is moving on after 12 years in local politics. Mitch Twolan isn’t on the ballot after serving as the mayor of Huron-Kinloss for 18 years. Southgate Mayor John Woodbury isn’t running. And Kincardine Mayor Gerry Glover is on the ballot, but he’s running for deputy mayor.
Municipal council and school board elections in Ontario will be held on Oct. 24, 2022.
