Biotechnology company Moderna is suing its competitors for violating their patents for messenger RNA therapeutics and vaccines.
Moderna has filed infringement lawsuits against Pfizer and BioNTech in both the state of Massachusetts and Dusseldorf, Germany.
Based on a media release, the company believes its competitors infringed patents that Moderna filed between 2010 and 2016. The patents in question had the mRNA technology that was the basis for COVID vaccines.
Moderna Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Bancel said in the release that the company was filing the lawsuits to protect, in their words, their innovative mRNA technology platform, which they invested billions of dollars in creating and patented in the decade before the COVID-19 pandemic.
