Huron Shores Hospice has raised over $200,000 from its sixth annual Handbags for Hospice event.
Hospice Co-Chair Cheryl Cottrill says the event held on Sept. 15 drew people for an evening of fundraising at the Kincardine Pavilion.
“Handbags for Hospice is composed of a live auction and a silent auction. The silent auction is all handbags that are bid on throughout the night, and then the live auction has three higher end handbags, plus four experiences that people can bid on. Then we play a few games through the night as well. We have appetizers and drinks and lots of fun,” says Cottrill.
Cottrill says they had a great event overall, as they were able to raise two-thirds of their annual operating expenses
Cottrill says the funds raised will go to support their annual operating budget.
“We get partial funding from the government, but we have to raise $310,000 a year in the community to keep the doors open for the hospice. That $209,000 is going to go a long way towards our 2023 operating expenses,” says Cottrill.
In addition to providing end-of-life care, the hospice also offers free programs for grief recovery, end of life doula services, death cafes, and end-of-life planning workshops.
