Hockey Day in Canada has wrapped up its final day in Owen Sound with a slew of events and games in the city.
On Jan. 21, residents walked and bussed to Harrison Park where they were greeted by a parade bringing in the Stanley Cup around 10:30 a.m.
A number of booths were also set up at the park including local radio, Foodland, Scotiabank, Bruce Power, and the Nuclear Innovation Institute.
Throughout the day there were a number of games occurring at both the park and at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre with Hockey Day in Canada being broadcasted live by Ron MacLean.
MacLean, who had set up shop at Harrison Park, is the host of Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada and Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.
Some of the games on the final day included Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association as Team Adidas took on Team Scotia, OUA Women’s Hockey as Waterloo faced off against Guelph, and the Owen Sound Attack rounding out the day playing against Peterborough Petes.
Local dignitaries also attended the event in Harrison Park, including Mayor Ian Boddy and MP Alex Ruff.
Boddy says he feels the weekend went flawlessly and the event allows people to share their own stories about hockey.
“Our community has a rich hockey history and an active sports community,” says Boddy. “Hockey is in our blood. People show up at all hours to watch the greatest sport ever created. Whether it is pond hockey, road hockey, house league, junior league, or professional, we are there cheering the players and teams along.”
Ruff adds it’s great to welcome the Stanley Cup to the riding and to bring back this event after being put off by the Pandemic.
“We are now in day four of a phenomenal week and great camaraderie,” says Ruff. “It’s a sense that not only has the area needed and the City of Owen Sound, but the whole country to start seeing everything coming back to normal, and there is nothing more Canadian than Hockey Day in Canada and this game that is that national pass time.”
Boddy and Ruff congratulated and thanked all the people who helped make Hockey Day In Canada in Owen Sound happen.
