Grey Highlands council is receiving an update on efforts to revive the Multi-Municipal Long Term Care Working Group this week before seeing if other municipalities are interested in joining.
Council will be receiving a report at its meeting on Wednesday. The report says the original Multi-Municipal Long-Term Care Working Group (MMLTCWG) was established in 2017 following a decision made by Grey County recommending the sale of the Grey Gables Long-Term Care facility in Markdale.
The county ended up changing course. Grey Gables remains a county-run facility and the committee disbanded since then.
Now Grey Highlands wants to revive it with the purpose of trying to lobby the county to redevelop Grey Gables into a 128-bed long-term care facility.
In 2021, Grey County scrapped the plan to redevelop the Markdale long-term care facility due to rising costs. Even the long-term care redevelopment the county is moving ahead with — Rockwood Terrace in Durham — is being scaled down because of costs.
A recommendation to Grey Highlands council on today’s meeting agenda asks them to approve the draft terms of reference for the Multi-Municipal Long-Term Care Working Group.
Mayor Paul McQueen says, “in my mind, the goals will be how can we assist the county in moving forward with the expansion of Grey Gables.”
He adds: “Grey Gables is one of the sought after homes, it has always been one of the longest wait list to get into Grey Gables because it is such a good home. It needs to be a regional approach on how we move forward with Grey Gables.”
