The City of Owen Sound is launching a community clean up campaign to mark the Provincial Day of Action on Litter.
The campaign titled, “Locals Love It Here,” is a partnership between the city and the River District, and includes a number of initiatives. One such initiative is a community clean-up kit, which will be available to borrow as of June 1.
The River District says in a release, the kit consists of everything a community group may need to run and community clean-up, including garbage bags, safety vests, trash pickers and more in a easy-to-navigate wagon. The garbage collected through this initiative can be dropped off at City Hall, or can be arranged through regular garbage pick-up.
The campaign comes as city staff volunteer their time today for the annual Provincial Day of Action on Litter. This annual day is celebrated on the second Tuesday in May, encouraging people to take action at home and in their community to help keep the environment clean and healthy.
“It is also focused on participants taking action to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills or becoming litter by bringing awareness to the impacts of waste on our environment,” says Community Development Coordinator Viveca Gravel. “We are volunteering our time over our lunch hours to do a small community clean-up along the river banks of 1st Avenue East and West in the 800 block.”
