One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a fire at an Owen Sound residence early Thursday morning.
Emergency services responded to the incident on 13th Street East — near 3rd Avenue East — just prior to 6 a.m.
Owen Sound Fire Prevention Officer Greg Nicol says a fire broke out in the ground-floor unit of a multi-residential property as a result of “careless smoking.”
Three occupants were inside the building and escaped safely. One was taken to hospital with a minor injury and has since been released.
Nicol says firefighters responded quickly and managed to contain the blaze to the ground floor unit only.
“All too often fires are started by smokers and smokers materials. If a fire does start in your house, get out, alert all the occupants and dial 911 from a safe location,” Nicol says. “And don’t hesitate and wait to dial 911.”
Firefighters remained on scene around 10 a.m. There was no visible fire damage to the exterior of the 13th Street East residence, but the home was being vented.
