Georgian Bluffs residents are being asked to share their thoughts on short-term accommodations.
The township is launching a survey to gather input which will eventually be presented to council before it makes decisions on potential policies for residences being rented out for short stays, including those offered through Airbnb and other platforms.
“Council and the township of Georigan Bluffs have heard from residents … that short-term accommodations are important to our community, and have unfortunately in some places caused some concerns for neighbours associated with noise, parking and various other issues,” says Acting CAO Niall Lobley. “Council has asked staff to have a look at what we might be able to do. And through that, we’re hoping to hear from residents and community members in Georgian Bluffs.”
Lobley says the survey will try to gather both negative and positive experiences people have had with short-term accommodations, and also try to gauge the value they bring to the area in the form of tourism.
“We’re really interested in exploring both the positive side short-term accommodations bring to our economy, as well as hearing any negative stories and challenges people might have encountered,” Lobley explains.
The survey is available online at www.engageGB.ca. You can also get a hard copy at the Georgian Bluffs administration office, Derby Community Centre, Shallow Lake Community Centre or Kemble Arena.
There is also a plan to host a public information session on Aug. 24, but the venue for the in-person event hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Lobley says township staff expects to make recommendations to council concerning short-term accommodations later this year.
