Kincardine’s first-ever Afro Caribbean Culture and Youth Recognition Awards event is getting closer, and they’re looking for community support.
Deputy Mayor Andrea Clarke says that they’ve had generous sponsors come forward to help support the event, and they’re always hoping that more community organizations will also step up.
“We’re happy that plans are going ahead full-steam, and all is looking well. We’re also pleased to say that a good number of sponsors have come forward to assist.”
The award night will be held next month, and they’re still hoping for more nominations to be given a chance to recognize and applaud members of the community between the ages of 5 and 25.
Clarke says that she’s grateful for the response they’ve had so far.
“We’ve had a very good response in relation to members of the community coming forward to nominate young people for these awards, so once again, we’re pleased. We’re pleased with the engagement overall, both in relation to individuals, whether that’s organizations wanting to partner or sponsor, or residents or teachers coming forward to nominate young people. So there has been positive engagement, and we’re thankful for that.”
The award ceremony will be taking place at the Davidson Centre on Saturday, October 21st from 6-8 p.m., and is free to attend. Those looking to participate are asked to register beforehand.
Clarke says it’s important that everyone who can attend should do so, to let the recipients know that they’ve got their community behind them.
“Coming forward to support these young people, to encourage them, to uplift them and to say that ‘We have a community, rooting for you and encouraging you, and wanting you to do and be the best you can be’, then we need to get that community out.”
The deadline to nominate a young person for an award is September 22nd.
The evening will have hors d’oeuvres starting at 6, followed by the award ceremony starting at 6:30, as well as a keynote speech from two-time Canadian National Poetry Slam Champion Dwayne Morgan.
The topic of his keynote is Inspiring Courageous Conversations.”
