Department Manager of Bruce Power Fire says they had tremendous success in this year’s national FireFit competition.
Steve Shute says they sent both a male and female team to the national event held in Sarnia on Sept. 13 to the 17.
“This is the second year that we have gotten into the FireFit competition. Bruce Power was active in FireFit prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and this will be the second year since coming out of that pandemic and our performance has continued to improve over the last two seasons,” says Shute.
He says for this year’s competition they had excellent results.
“We had a team that placed first in the industrial mixed relay team, that’s both men and women in a mixed format at the competition, and then our women’s team placed third overall in the individual combined time categories. Excellent results for both our men and women who competed throughout the 2023 season,” says Shute.
This follows the regional event held in August in Port Elgin, where an firefighter from Owen Sound won the gold at the event.
Shute says the events the teams competed in at the national event were not that much different compared to the regional competition, which included axe swinging, dragging victims, and climbing stairs into a tower.
After doing well at the national event, Shute says they do not plan on attending the international event later this year.
“We won’t be competing any further in the international competition this year, however, we have had great success with our female team beginning in 2022. I think we were a standout by fielding an all women’s team for one of the first times last year,” says Shute. “We have seen great expansion of women participation in the FireFit competition as we progress through 2023 and I think that is a lot to be proud of.”
