South Bruce Peninsula has officially appointed its Deputy Mayor, Caleb Hull.
Today, Council unanimously passed a bylaw confirming hull to the seat, and he was sworn in.
He fills the seat left vacant by former Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland who was recently appointed mayor after the resignation of Garry Michi from the head of council.
A town release says Hull is from Wiarton. He studied horticulture at Niagara College. He’s been a board member of the Wiarton Business Improvement Area (BIA) the Wiarton & District Agricultural Society and the William Wilfred
Campbell Appreciation Society and Arts Festival.
He’s also been a director of the Bruce Peninsula Hospitals Foundation and on the board of the Heritage Committee for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
The Town says he has worked on horticultural projects with the Chippewas of Nawash at the Kitaamgwedaagwad Gindaaswin Adult Learning Centre, Kikendaasogamig Elementary School facilitating a Tree Canada grant to continue efforts to green school spaces with culturally relevant plants. He’s also been part of the Healthy Living program planning community garden spaces.
Mayor Jay Kirkland says in a statement, “Council is proud to have such a strong community advocate serve in the capacity of Deputy Mayor, ” adding, “We are confident that Deputy Mayor Hull will bring a fresh new perspective as Council works to achieve many important priorities”
Hull says, “I look forward to serving my community and appreciate Council’s confidence in my abilities.”
Of the current members of council, Hull had the most votes in the 2022 municipal election.
Meanwhile, council will now need to declare Hull’s previous seat vacant and a report outlining options to fill it will come back at an upcoming meeting.
Those options may include a by-election, or appointing an eligible elector.
