The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has declared a council seat vacant.
Former councillor Caleb Hull was appointed Deputy Mayor November 7th, leaving the council seat vacant. This comes after former Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland was named mayor after the resignation of former mayor Garry Michi.
The declaration is the first step in the process of filling a council seat, according to the Municipal Act.
Staff say, “Reports regarding council’s options for filling vacancies on council and subsequent council discussions, will take place in the near future.”
The Municipal Act says within 60 days of declaring the council seat vacant, council must decide whether to fill the vacancy through a by-election or by appointment for the remainder of the council term.
The Act also says council can decide whether to fill a vacancy through by-election or through appointment, and the Act says council decides what process it will use to choose the person it appoints.
