The provincial government is supporting transit in the region with an over $1 million investment.
MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Rick Byers says these funds come from the 2023-24 Gas Tax program and can be used to expand service hours, increase routes, purchase new vehicles, and improve accessibility.
The money is split between:
-$740,828 for Hanover, including Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Grey Highlands, Hurron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate, and West Grey
-$65,797 for Meaford
-$245,919 for Owen Sound
Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson says the funding directly supports the Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit Corporation (SMART), which provides service across the region.
“SMART is an important service in our region, providing an accessible transit option for our residents to get to and from commitments such as medical appointments, community events and shopping,” says Paterson.
Meaford Mayor Ross Kentner adds Meaford Moves+ will also be supported by these funds, which provinces accessible transit.
Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy says, “this investment from the province through the Gas Tax program will allow us to continue to provide a high level of transit service in Owen Sound while supporting our growing region.”
