The Billy Bishop Museum in Owen sound is holding its annual Honouring Our Local Veterans ceremony today.
The event at the Royal Canadian Legion in Owen Sound will commemorate 10 veterans from the region to served and sacrificed for their country.
The museum says the program has honoured over 240 veterans spanning the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Cold War, and UN Peacekeeping Mission.
This year’s honourees include:
-Aircraftwoman II Evelyn (Johnson) Bewley, Royal Canadian Air Force. She was a peacetime volunteer who enlisted in 1951 and patrolled London as a part of the Military Police.
-Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Harold Harrison Burr, Fort Garry Horse, Royal Canadian Armoured Corp. Burr enlisted with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters and had arrived in France as a reinforcement after D-Day and was killed in 1944 during operation Totalize.
-Flying Officer James Downing, No. 12 Squadron RAF. Downing enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was pilot on a RAF Lancaster which went missing during nighttime air operations over Germany.
-Private Charles Golden, 2nd Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade. He is a First World War veteran who participated in the Hundred Day Campaign, which brought an end to the war.
-Private Thomas Albert Golden, 2nd Canadian Pioneer, Canadian Expeditionary Force. A First World War veteran who was wounded in France and was medically discharged.
-Paratrooper Clarence David Lapierre, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. Lapierre parachuted into France on D-Day and died of wounds received while attempting to capture the Chateau at Varaville on June 7.
-Chief Petty Officer First Class Robert Larsen, Royal Canadian Navy. Larsen served on the HMCS Athabaskan during the Korean War and was in the Navy until retirement.
-Private Alfred Joseph McLeod, Perth Regiment. He enlisted less than three weeks after Britain declared war on Germany and served in the Italian Campaign. He was killed in 1944 while advancing towards the Arielli River.
-Trooper John Joseph McLeod, 1st Hussars. McLeod enlisted with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters and was in the second wave on Juno Beach with the 1st Hussars before he died of wounds in 1944 as a result of friendly fire.
-Flying Officer Moses Rabovsky, No. 429 Squadron, RCAF. Rabovsky had run several successful bombing missions over Germany before his Halifax crashed while bombing strategic targets in preparation for D-Day.
