Policing services across the region are aiming to take impaired drivers off the road this holiday season by taking part in the Festive RIDE campaign.
Grey Bruce OPP says they, along with South Bruce OPP and municipal police including Owen Sound Police, Hanover Police, Saugeen Shores Police, and West Grey Police will take part in the annual campaign, which runs until Jan. 1, 2025.
The campaign is an education initiative which reminds drivers officers conduct regular mandatory alcohol screenings with drivers who are lawfully pulled over at RIDE stops.
Owen Sound Police says alcohol and drugs continues to be the most prominent factor in serious road collisions in Canada, and RIDE programs remain an important part of road safety by creating a visible reminder to not drive impaired.
Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose says, “with the holiday season upon us, it’s crucial to prioritize safety for everyone on our roads. We all want to enjoy time with family and friends, but that enjoyment should never come at the cost of someone’s life. There is no excuse for impaired driving. I urge everyone to enjoy responsibly and plan ahead, and call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. Let’s work together to make this holiday season a safe one for all.”
