The Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) wants to buy Canadian when possible.
The board unanimously approved a motion from Vice-Chair Jan Johnstone at its regular meeting on March 18, which says as recent trade policies have created challenges that may negatively impact fair and reciprocal trade between Canada and the United States, the BWDSB evaluate and implement measures to prioritize buying Canadian products when possible.
The motion adds the BWDSB also immediately transition away from purchasing from American suppliers if viable, as well as write the Minister of Education requesting similar measures be considered and implemented across Ontario.
Board Chair Jane Thomson says, “While our board already does a lot to buy domestically, it is especially important now for us to prioritize our local businesses, and those within Ontario and Canada.”
