The resurfacing of Port Elgin’s main street through town begins Monday and will continue until August.
Work on Goderich Street (Highway 21) is set to begin March 31st and will include resurfacing of the asphalt, some minor underground infrastructure upgrades and the restoration of the historic brick maple leaf intersections downtown.
The Town says sections of Goderich Street will be closed during the first two phases of work. Then it will have alternating lane closures for phases three to five.
Phase one will involve underground infrastructure work and interlocking brick replacement at the intersections of Gustavus Street and Green Street.
Phase two will involve underground infrastructure work and interlocking brick replacement at the intersections of Mill Street and Elgin Street, as well as new asphalt between Market Street and Emma Street.
They say detours will be posted, municipal parking lots will still be available for use and pedestrian access to all downtown businesses will be maintained.
The Town says the schedule of the work is meant to minimize the disruption to downtown businesses and traffic. They say phase one will take place before Victoria Day weekend, with phase two between Victoria Day and June 27. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7p.m., Monday to Friday.
The Town says Phase three, four and five will take place immediately following Phase two. The exact timing will be determined based on phase one and two completion dates.
They note, these later phases will not require full closures of the road. The full project is expected to be completed by August 1.
Ridge Street (from Bruce Road 25) will be temporarily opened to provide an alternative route to the south end of Port Elgin.
Saugeen Shores is using $2.69 million in grant money from the Province’s Connecting Links Program under the Ministry of Transportation. The whole job will see the resurfacing of 4.25 km of Goderich Street from Concession 6 to Concession 10 in Port Elgin.
