The Lamont Sports Park Fundraising Strategy group is ready to help build what they call, “The Field of Dreams,” in south Port Elgin.
At the July 12th Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole meeting, committee member Rob Fawcett says with council’s approval they have a plan in place.
Fawcett says they hope to raise $1-million for future phases of the Lamont Sports Park.
That would include a couple more ball fields to the four already under construction, along with amenities for ball players and visitors alike such as snack bar and restroom area, batting cages, storage building and picnic shelters.
Fawcett says they hope to begin fundraising later this year.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says “It’s a high bar they’ve set for themselves,” but he points out without that one million dollars it’s going to be difficult to move the next phases forward.
He says, “It may be a high goal but I think it’s a necessary goal.”
Total estimated cost for the future phases is put at $2.25-million.
The suggested plan would have the town allocated $1.25-million in capital costs in 2023 and the fundraising would take care of the rest.
