Helen Lougheed (nee Connor) of Thornbury Ontario passed away at the Meaford General Hospital following a sudden health event on Sunday August 22, 2021 at the age of 96.
Born in Oshawa, she was the daughter of the late John and Amy (nee Lawrence) Connor. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Frank in 2018. She was predeceased by her sisters Rose Lougheed (nee Connor), Mary Mann (nee Connor) and brother George. Helen was also predeceased by her many brothers and sisters-in-law.
Helen will be dearly missed by her son Peter and daughter Carol as well as by her daughter-in-law Ann (nee Donahoe) and granddaughter Lindsay and grandson Peter Jr Lougheed. She will also be missed by her many beloved nieces and nephews.
Though born in Oshawa, Helen’s family returned to the area as her father was needed to help run the family farm on the northwest corner of County Road 40 and Beaver Valley Road 13. She went to the school in Clarksburg on Hillcrest Drive and then the Thornbury Continuation School for high school. The latter is where she met Frank. They became sweethearts but Helen’s family moved back to Oshawa during the war after their farm was sold following the death of her grandfather. Helen then graduated from the Oshawa Business College in 1943 and took on a bookkeeping job at a firm in Toronto. However, in 1949, though they had been separated by distance for many years, she married Frank and moved back to Thornbury. Frank often said she left a good opportunity in Toronto to move up here and live with him in poverty. But that was not the case and they were married for 69 loving years. Helen worked part time as a bookkeeper for several businesses in the area including Clarksburg Contractors and Skippen Transport.
Helen was a very quiet, shy soul. She was never heard to complain about anything. Though the years brought on the usual painful ailments, when asked how she was feeling, she would always reply “Oh I am fine”. She was a devoted mother. In 1958 Helen and Frank adopted Peter and in 1962 they adopted Carol. Helen was lovingly committed to looking after her children until the day she died. In younger years Mom enjoyed ice skating, curling, walks, bike rides, and knitting. To the end she was a voracious reader. We feel she’s doing all this again. Rest in peace Mom!
She was a humble person and like her husband Frank, shunned any sort of limelight or attention. In light of this, and in accordance with her wishes there will be a simple family service as she is interred at the Thornbury-Clarksburg Union Cemetery.
The care our mother Helen received from the nurses at the Meaford General Hospital was overwhelming. There is no way to adequately state how grateful we will forever be to them. Their compassionate, skillful and professional care over the course of Mom’s four day stay will never be forgotten. They carefully guarded Helen’s dignity, while providing care for her and her family. You are very special people. If so desired, and as an expression of sympathy, donations to the Meaford Hospital Foundation would be appreciated and may be made through Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, Ontario N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
