Donelda Verl McLay passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Owen Sound Regional Hospital with her family by her side. Donelda Verl McLay (Sutcliffe) in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of the late Hugh McLay (1980) and the late Bill Masterson (2016). Loved mother of Marjorie Brohman (Peter), Marlene McLay, Michael McLay (Marlena), Patricia McLay (Michael), Pam Mclay Dagneau (Rob). Verl had 9 grandchildren: Jesse Brohman, Katie Braiden (Kris), Jessica McLay, Jeremy Rees and Kali Rees, Carter McLay, Jacob McLay, Mackenzie Reid and Willow Masterson; 6 great grandchildren, Jackson, Dawson, Blake, Alexis, Kingston and Jameson. Dearly loved sister of Brad (June), Gwen Davis, Dick Hoare (Ann), Marilyn Smith (Clayton), Wendell (Elaine), Paul, Tom (Pam), Brenda Galbraith (Butch). Verl is predeceased by her parents Peg and Hugh Stucliffe, Ron Sutcliffe (Helene), Cheryl Bartlett (Will), Fred Davis, Sue Sutcliffe. Verl will also be remembered by the McLay and Masterson families and several nieces and nephews.
Verl was a member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for 60 years (2020) and of the Branch for 35 years. She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary Br 6 and was involved in Winter Carnival, Snow Blast, the Minor Soft ball league, Miamsburg Committee, Home Coming, Meals on Wheels, Old Timers Hockey and several Community projects. She worked at Dr. MacKinnon Philips Hospital and also the General and Marine Hospital (where she volunteered in Palliative Care for 20 years); she also worked for the Red Cross and McKeeva Health Care; in 1988 she attended Georgian College where she obtained her H.C.A. Certificate (her childhood nursing career dream came true) – you’re never too old to get an education.
A memorial service to celebrate Verl’s life will be held at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492 on Friday, November 19th, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Heather Mc Carrel officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home. All attending the visitation and funeral service must wear a mask and show proof of double vaccination.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Chapman House, Heart & Stroke Foundation and Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 6 would be appreciated and may be made through the funeral home.
