South Bruce Peninsula council has approved a $3.8 million tender for the Mary Street reconstruction project.
A report was brought to council during their meeting on Dec. 21, recommending the contract for the work in Wiarton be awarded to Harold Sutherland Construction Limited (Walker Industries).
Council also approved the extension of the town’s current contract for the reconstruction project with RJ Burnside and Associates for the construction inspection and contract administration phase of the project for an estimated cost of $160,000.
The approved 2021 capital budged provided funding for over $3.1 million. With the additional allocations, the total budget for this project will go up to $4.1 million.
The tender awarded for the reconstruction project of Mary Street from Claude Street to Isaac Street is the second attempt made after South Bruce Peninsula put out a call earlier this year in June. However, contractor availability and supply chain issues resulted in no bids being submitted for the project.
The Mary Street reconstruction project includes the replacement and upgrade to the street infrastructure in Wiarton, as well as the replacement of sanitary sewer, watermain, storm sewer, concrete sidewalk and curbs, and road base and surface pavement.
The report says the project is eligible for funding as a result of a successful grant application from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program Green Stream, providing over $2 million.
The project is geared to start as early as possible in the new year, however, it is contingent on the removal of half loads restrictions.
Mayor Janice Jackson says, “Wiarton has century old infrastructure under the roads and we have been working for years applying for grants to completely replace that infrastructure. Of course Berford Street and the Big Dig were the most recent projects and so we were thrilled to receive funding to do Mary Street.”
