It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert James Legge, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Dad passed away peacefully at Chapman House Hospice with the three of us by his side.
Dad was a beloved husband of 52 years to Nancy (nee Hogendoorn), and a loving father to Jason and Andrea, as well as a Proud Papa to his grandkids Kaiden, Quinn, Clare, and Carter. He was also a very special “Uncle Bob” to many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all who crossed his path. Dad was a family man and was very close to both the Legge family and the extended Hogendoorn family. He is survived by his brother David and his sisters Helen, Ruth, Gwen, Heather, Fern and Anne (deceased).
Born on a farm outside Chesley, to Francie and Alice Legge, he was the oldest son in a family of 8 children. At 17, he started working at Loblaws as a stock boy. By the time he was 25 years old he was one of the youngest store managers in the country. At age 40, Dad needed a change and purchased Peers Topsoil, Gravel and Excavation which he owned until retirement.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed early morning walks at the Harry Lumley Bayshore and Harrison Park, friendly banter at the coffee shop, lunches at Jason’s Pub, country drives, traveling, and cards with Mom and his good friends. Dad just loved people, he was a social butterfly and everyone knew him. We couldn’t have dinner in Owen Sound without multiple people coming to our table to say hi and have a quick chat. Loyal to his friends and kind to his neighbors, Dad was always there for a good laugh, and to lend a helping hand when needed. He treasured his motorcycle rides with his Pals on his beloved pearly white Can Am Spyder…sometimes mom was even invited to tag along for the ride. More than anything, he just loved people. He loved being with family and friends and you always knew his door was open at the house, the cottage, or the shop!
One of Dad’s legacies will be his generous spirit. He took great pride in being involved in the betterment of our community. He cherished his Lifelong Achievement Award from the Grey Bruce Homebuilders Association for his years of service, both as a lifetime member, and Executive. As recently as this winter, Dad ran a mini excavator for his snowmobile club, the Grey Bruce East Snowmobile Club, rerouting and updating the trail system through the Springmount area. He volunteered his time and expertise whenever he could for projects such as the Bayshore Boat Launch, and various other Order of Good Cheer projects. These contributions come to mind as projects he cherished.
He was a great father, and husband, and was loved by everyone whose lives he touched, too many to name. A Come and Go “Celebration of Life” memorial will be taking place soon, with details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chapman House Hospice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Arrangements entrusted to the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K 3X8 (519) 376-7492.
