No one was hurt in a fire at a duplex in Owen Sound’s west end Sunday evening.
Owen Sound firefighters responded to a report of an explosion at 923 8th Avenue West just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the fire department.
Owen Sound Fire Captain Wayne Flood says it was called in as a barbecue fire initially and then upgraded to a structure fire while first responders were en route.
He says firefighters could see plumes of smoke rising into the air as they were approaching the scene from 10th Street.
“On arrival, we could see heavy smoke conditions in the northeast portion of the structure,” Flood says.
Both units of the residential building were on fire as crews arrived at the scene, mostly from the roof area.
Flood says all the firefighters worked well in extreme heat conditions and managed to get the blaze under control quickly.
“We were able to salvage a lot of memorabilia for the homeowners,” says Flood.
No one was hurt.
Victim Services Bruce Grey Perth attended the scene and provided assistance to the two residents of the building.
The duplex suffered extensive damage. The fire department estimates the value of the damage to both units to be about $600,000.
The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
