The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association is bringing back its third annual Bruce Peninsula Gravel Gran Fondo fundraising cycling event to Northern Bruce Peninsula.
Event Organizer Mike Campbell says this event running on Oct. 2 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., will help raise money for the association’s various projects.
Campbell says the sold out event of 400, will have participants cycling various distances between 35 kilometres and 150 kilometres.
“It will take people up the eastern shore of the peninsula. It involves a little bit of hiking on the Bruce Trail and ends up at Cabot Head lighthouse, and then it works its way back into Lion’s Head, where we have a festival tent, beer garden, and everyone gets lunch,” says Campbell.
While Campbell was not able to confirm how much they have raised to meet a goal of around $47,000, the entry fee for the event was priced between $90 and $110.
The funds raised will support such projects like solar watering systems, and working with farmers to come up with a system to filter barnyard waste.
“The association really survives on grants for the most part and grants do not typically allow discretionary funding to hire staff for administration and other activities that the biosphere is involved in. It just gives us a little bit more flexibility as an organization,” says Campbell.
Campbell says the association was able to raise $40,000 last year from this event
Northern Bruce Peninsula council recently approved a request from the association at its meeting on Aug. 22, to temporarily close Phillip Forbes Street and Webster and Scott Streets west of Helen Street for the event.
