The Town of Saugeen Shores is starting the rehabilitation of North Shore Trail this week.
The town says while the work is ongoing, a road closure will be in place along North Shore Road between McVicar Street to Bushwood Lane in Port Elgin.
The rehabilitation is looking to install large armourstone along the water’s edge and rebuild the slope up to the existing trail. Crews will also be reconstruction a three-metre-wide trail beside the existing road.
A $600,000 grant was received by the town for the project to rebuild the area using leftover rock from other construction jobs, minimizing the need for brand-new quarry rock.
Additionally, the town says it will take the recommendations from the Saugeen Ojibway Nation to plant native species to act as a buffer against erosion. By starting the work now, the town adds it is avoiding impacting any spawning fish in the area.
CAO Kara Van Myall says they are excited this project is underway.
“Several years of high-water levels have taken their toll on an important Town asset. We are creating a 50-to-100-year fix against the power of Mother Nature, so we wanted to do this right the first time. Careful planning by our engineering department will result in a strong and secure trail for all our residents and visitors to enjoy,” says Van Myall.
The work is expected to be completed mid or late December.
