Don passed away peacefully in his 97th year on Wednesday September 7, 2022 at GBHS in Meaford, surrounded with the love of his family.
He was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 1992 and Marilyn in 2021.
Don is lovingly remembered by sons Paul of Owen Sound and Robert (Margret) of Kitchener, daughters Deborah Brunner (Bernard) of Meaford, Cheryl Mather of Meaford, Judy Campbell (Murray) of Etobicoke and Kathryn Lumley (Garry) of Owen Sound. Don is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Andrew Doran, Kieran Doran (Kelsey), Conor Doran, Jennifer Doran (Milan), Carolyn Bond (Mike), Matthew Brunner, Christopher Mather (Natalie), Stephen Mather (Emily), Dylan Campbell, Graham Campbell, Garth Lumley (Alisha), Joshua Lumley, and Jacob Lumley. He is also remembered by 6 great grandchildren, Emilia and Addison Michale, Grayson and Tucker Mather, Maverick Mather and Cameron Bond.
In 1943, Don enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and a year later transferred to the Army. He served in postwar Germany. In 1960, he was deployed with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in the Belgian Congo. He was also posted to several army bases throughout his military career including Gagetown NB, Calgary AB, Petawawa ON, Borden ON and Meaford ON. Don retired as a Captain from the CAF in 1972. After his military career, Don worked as Sales Manager at Stanley Knight Flooring Ltd. in Meaford, a job that he enjoyed immensely.
He was a proud member of The Canadian Legion and regularly participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies. Service to his community was very important to Don. He joined the Rotary Club of Meaford in 1983 serving as Club President and chairing various committees.
Family was everything to Don and he cherished every moment he had with them. He also valued his independence and lived in his own home up to his 96th year. The last five months of his life were spent at Meaford Long Term Care.
Don’s family will receive friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Monday, September 12, 2022 from 6 until 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at Meaford United Church on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 11 o’clock with a reception to follow.
