Owen Sound Police say a member of their service has been recognized with a Queen’s Jubilee commemorative coin for donating a portion of her liver to a co-worker.
Police say Special Constable Cory Fernando was honoured during a short ceremony on Saturday, for her donation in February to Special Constable Jason Helm who suffers from cystic fibrosis and was experiencing life threatening liver failure as a result.
Both Fernando and Helm recovered well from the surgery and both returned to work and their regular lives.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Alex Ruff presented the coin and certificate to Fernando, with Fernando’s family in attendance, along with Helm and representatives from the Owen Sound Police Association.
Chief Craig Ambrose extended thanks to Mayor Ian Boddy and members of Owen Sound City council for keeping Fernando in their thoughts through their nomination.
“I continue to be extremely proud of Cory and the incredible gift of life she provided for Jason through her donation,” says Ambrose.
