Air space in the Tobermory area was closed Sunday afternoon as NORAD responded to an object in the sky over Lake Huron, near the Canada-U.S. border.
Canada’s Minister of Defence Anita Anand confirmed “a high-altitude object” was detected in U.S. airspace over Lake Huron.
“NORAD launched Canadian and U.S. aircraft to investigate and the object was taken down in U.S. airspace by U.S. aircraft,” Anand says in a social media post. “We unequivocally support this action.”

The Canadian Armed Forces offered a similar description of the events in a brief statement on Twitter: “… a high-altitude object was detected and taken down by NORAD aircrafts over Lake Huron, Michigan. NORAD, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, and other partners have been assessing the situation and working in close coordination. Canadians are safe, and we are working binationally with our American allies to ensure the security of North American airspace.”
It’s the fourth object shot out of the sky, since a suspected Chinese spy balloon was downed on Feb. 4 off the United States east coast.
On Friday, an object was shot down over sea ice off Alaska. Then Saturday, another flying device was destroyed over the Yukon.
Flight trackers and pilot reports suggest air space over the entire Bruce Peninsula, and some parts of northern Grey (Owen Sound) and Bruce counties were closed during the NORAD operation yesterday.
Looks like the KC135 was caught from Lions Head. Nice grab. @SR_Planespotter https://t.co/fkdpEedCa0
