In her 95th year, has passed peacefully, and surrounded by love, on May 30, 2023 at Guelph General Hospital.
Bernice was blessed beyond measure to have been married to the love of her life, Bev Kerr, for over 75 years. She was the proud mother of Keith Kerr (Carol), Rick Kerr (Jeanette), John Kerr (Jean Ann), Jim Kerr (Carol), Sharon Dupuis (Jeff), and Dan Kerr (Sandi). She was adored by her grandchildren Krista Hawthorn (Rob), Brandon Kerr (Holly), Lindsay McArthur (Shawn), Cayley Stanko (John), Tiffany Kerr, Kersten Dupuis-Waud (Garrett), Scott and Keith Fletcher, and her 9 great-grandchildren. She shared a special bond and friendship with her sister Joan Young.
Bernice was predeceased by her son and daughter-in-law Keith and Carol Kerr, her granddaughter Tiffany Kerr, and by her siblings Peg Boyd, Patricia Pegalo, and Rick Young.
Bernice was known to have many names. Whether she was referred to by her loved ones as Bernice, Bill, Mom, Grandma, Mama, or Great Grandma; she was known for her open heart and open home. Bernice was infamous for welcoming people in and offering a meal. One of her life mottos was “there’s always room for one more” and this philosophy was extended to all without limitation. She was a wonderful cook, and renowned for her apple pie. If the secret ingredient truly was love, it comes as no surprise as she was never in short supply. Bernice was a very proud soldier in the Salvation Army. She was a shining example of someone who would practice what she’d preach and lived by example. It was these strong convictions and her pure heart that made her such a profoundly treasured matriarch in her family.
The family would like the extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Guelph General Hospital for the incredible care and compassion.
Visitation will take place Friday, June 2, 2023 from 6-9 PM at Thomas C. Whitcroft Peninsula Chapel, 272 Berford St., Wiarton, (519) 534-5341. A funeral service will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at The Wiarton Salvation Army Church, 576 Edward St., Wiarton, with reception to follow. As expression of sympathy, donations to the Wiarton Salvation Army or Operation Smile Canada would be appreciated by the family. Because Bernice always said, “There is nothing better that putting a smile on a child’s face.”
