Grey County’s Committee of the Whole is approving the draft plan for a proposed subdivision in Meaford.
Council heard from Senior Planner Hiba Hussain on the project, also known as the Meaford Union Centre subdivision, and its plan to create 83 residential units, including single units and semi-detached units on lands at 324 Union Street during a meeting on July 13.
A report from Hussain says the county and the Municipality of Meaford received applications for the development in 2021 and the municipality recently passed a zoning amendment.
“The property has access off of Union Street to the east and Centre Street to the west. The property currently has not structures on site and it is currently vacant and is surrounded by primarily by residential development and vacant lands,” says Hussain.
The subdivision was originally proposed to include more residential units, but the report says it was modified to reflect public input on the development.
Meaford Mayor Ross Kentner says he is excited to hear the committee approved the draft plan.
“We have waited a long time to see this kind of growth and these are good projects,” says Kentner.
He adds he does not believe they have heard anything about pricing at either the municipal or county levels for the new homes.
“I know this mix of singles and semis is definitely going to be trying to hit the mark,” says Kentner. “Million dollar condos are not what we really need more of in Meaford. We need housing that is affordable, or at least attainable,” says Kentner.
Kentner says he thinks some progress on the subdivision will be made soon.
