Ada Mildred Binkley passed away with her family by her side on Monday, July 31, 2023 at Chapman House in Owen Sound at the age of 96.
Born in Euphrasia Township on May 22, 1927, a daughter to the late Thomas and Emma (nee Elford) McNalty.
As a young woman, Ada moved to Toronto to find work, where she also found love. Ada and Edgar Carlton Wade were married in 1951. Edgar passed away suddenly in 1954. Ada and her infant daughter returned to Meaford. Taking an apple-picking job for Harold Binkley was life-changing. Ada and Harold were married in 1961. Theirs’ was a true partnership, building a family as well as an apple growing, storing and packing business. Ada lost her partner when Harold passed away in 1978. She continued to be an integral part of the business decision-making until it’s sale in 2013.
Family meant everything to Ada. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A highlight of her summers was the McNalty family reunions as well as the hymn sings she hosted. Her extended and church family were very important to her and she enjoyed participating in the WAVES ladies’ group and the hymn sings hosted by the Meaford, Owen Sound and Collingwood congregations. When she was not busy in the office running the family business, she would often be found tending to her begonias and other flowers or resting with a cat on her lap. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, curling and later started swimming at the pool in Thornbury with a group of friends. She enjoyed playing cards, board games and going for walks. She loved to travel to islands as varied as Hawaii and the Caribbean with family and friends, enjoying the many adventures and memories they shared together.
Predeceased by her husbands, Edgar Wade (1954) and Harold Binkley (1978). Also pre-deceased by siblings, Peter, Vina Kentner (John), Muriel Tulloch (Tom), Evan (Amy), Phyllis Dale (Walter), Don (Ina), Edna Preston (Eugene), Russel, sister-in-law Eileen Dale and step-son Gerald.
Fondly remembered by daughters, Cynthia and Myrna (Lamb), grandchildren Brett, Todd (Anna), Justin (Cassandra), Lynne (Trevor Ireton) and seven great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Sherry, many nieces and nephews of the Binkley and McNalty families, church family, friends and employees of Binkley Apples Limited.
