September 22, 1923- October 21, 2023
Passed peacefully at his home in Flesherton on Saturday Oct 21, 2023. He is reunited with his beloved wife, the late Elma (nee Hamilton 2015), married on September 28, 1946. Loving father of Les (2015), Keith (Mary Kerr) of Flesherton, Alana (Scott 2016) Hawthorn of Cambridge. Cherished father in law to Sharon MacIntosh and Janice MacKinnon. Proud grandfather of Brock (Kate), Amber (Damien), Sarah (Mike), Kailey (Kyle), Jessie (Jonathan), Cadence and Silas (Ella). Loved and remembered by 10 great grandchildren; Dale, Seth, Will, Beverley, Ellie, Jules, Andi, Jensen, Miles and Scottie. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Also survived by in-laws: Garnet, Harold and Donna Jean Hamilton.
John was the grandson of pioneers. Born on the South Line of Artemesia Township on September 22 1923, he was the youngest of 5 children born to Donald and Sarah MacKinnon. In late August of this year family gathered on this property to celebrate 100 years of Awesome.
John continued to maintain an independent lifestyle in the home that he and Elma built in 1968. His working career began as a teenager running the family farm after his father’s death. He worked a number of years as a woodcutter. After his marriage he started a haulage business which evolved into John MacKinnon and Son, a successful excavation business.
Despite being a homebody he loved road trips. He and Elma drove coast to coast to coast in Canada numerous times. In his retirement years he enjoyed time with family and friends, camping, card games, gardening, reading and being involved in his church and mens’ group. The Blue Jays, the Maple Leafs and the CFL have lost a loyal fan.
Always an inspiration to friends and family with his wit and wisdom. He led by example and lived life on his own terms. He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends at Gentle Shepherd Community Church, Eugenia on Thursday, October 26 from 11:00 and until the time of service at 1:00pm followed by refreshments. Internment at Evergreen.
If desired, memorial contributions to Gentle Shepherd Community Church or Centre Grey Health Services Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
