Billy Bishop is hitting the stage at the Harmony Centre in Owen Sound just in time for Remembrance Day.
Member of the Board of Directors for the Harmony Centre Jeff Elie says the Billy Bishop Goes To War play on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. is part of a series to mark a milestone.
“It’s part of a 10 for 10 Series that the Harmony has been putting putting on to celebrate 10 years of service to the community with 10 really interesting and popular performances,” says Elie. “Billy Bishop is the second last, we have another one coming up, a violin duo later on in the month.”
This two-act play will take the audience back to 1915 to enjoy an evening of music, comedy, drama, and history all about Owen Sound’s hero.
Matt Evans, who is playing Bishop, relates the show to Top Gun Maverick, but set in the 1900s.
“He went from an Owen Sound farm boy to a decorated pilot by the age of 23, which I think a lot of people don’t know and this show is kind of like time travel where you travel back in time but it is all done through music and songs and stories and it’s all told from the perspective of Billy Bishop,” says Evans.
He says what makes Billy Bishop so impressive, is him topping British pilots in the number of planes he shot down, while at a young age during World War One.
“I really relate to Billy Bishop, at least his history, because I was kind of the same kind of guy when I was his age. I didn’t do too well in school and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and I think it is the same as Billy Bishop who didn’t know what he wanted to do, he wasn’t so good in school and when he actually got to do something, he learned what his skill set was,” says Evans.
