Saugeen Shores councillors are in support of recommended changes outlined in a “Safe to School” plan created by some residents.
The group presented 57 recommendations to the Town after doing safety studies of local school zones.
Town staff told councillors at their Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, of those 57 recommendations, 42 are within the Town’s scope of responsibility and staff recommend implementing 30 of them.
Staff say the money for many of the changes is already accounted for in this year’s budget.
The recommendations include adding some signage, parking, a number of new sidewalks around schools, some new crosswalks, crossing lights, and other traffic related changes to help keep kids safe while going to and from school.
Councillor Bud Halpin thanked those who did the work to identify improvements, adding, “If anyone wonders if all this is needed, just drop off a kid at Port Elgin Saugeen Central. Just drive by Northport School. You’ll see this needed to be done, and I’m glad we’re getting it done.”
