Northern Bruce Peninsula is awarding a couple of contacts for the replacement of Judges Creek Bridge and reconstructing the sidewalk in Lion’s Head.
Council approved awarding an over $1 million contract to Bridge Excavating Ltd. for the work at Judges Creek Bridge and an over $378,000 tender to Signature Contractors for the first phase of upgrades to the Main Street sidewalk in Lion’s Head during a meeting on April 8.
Bridge Excavating will be removing the existing bridges on the Concession 4 Sideroad and Side Road 10 and replace them with new structures.
This comes after the municipality issued a request for proposals on March 8, before closing on the 22.
Four responses were received, with Bridge Excavating being the least expensive.
A report from Public Works Manager Tory Cameron says, “of the four tenders received Bridge Excavating Ltd. were the only contractor to include a $15,000 credit, which will bring the project cost below the budget allocation of $1 million.”
The contract requires all the work to be completed by Oct. 1.
Signature Contractors received the tender after a 2021 Roads and Sidewalk Needs Study by GM BluePlan Engineering Limited, which found the Main Street sidewalks are a potential tripping hazard.
The first phase of the reconstruction project will focus on the east side of main Street between Webster Street and Mill Street and the sidewalk on the west side of Main Street between John Street and Webster Street.
Cameron says in another report, “in the future, the plan is to continue in both a northerly direction to Scott and Edgewood Street and southerly to Moore Street and United Church.”
The municipality choose Bridge Excavating after it sent out a request for proposal in February and closed March 1. Three companies expressed interest with Bridge Excavating being the most expensive.
To reduce the impact on local businesses, residents and tourists during the summer season, the municipality moved the preferred completion date from May 31 to July 1.
