West Grey is going to look into cost effective options to potentially replace a corroded bridge in Normanby.
Council received a report for information during a meeting on May 21, following the closure of the bridge on Concession 18 between Grey Road 3 and Grey Road 28 on April 29.
In late April, an investigation and inspection identified corrosion along the structure and it was immediately closed.
The municipality called in Burgess Engineering Inc. to inspect the bridge to determine if it could be repaired. The company advised the municipality following the inspection repair would be difficult, invasive and expensive.
Director of Infrastructure and Public Works Geoff Aitken says the bridge was last inspected two years ago.
Previously in 2019, West Grey started developing a concept design for the replacement of the bridge, and council had directed staff to schedule an open house to provide an update to the community on the bridge’s current condition as well as culvert structures and a potential closure plan.
An open house is now scheduled for this coming fall.
While replacing the bridge is the likely alternative according to a report from Aitken, West Grey does not have the funds in the 2024 operating or capital budget to tackle this or any other project.
A cost to replace the bridge will later be provided in next year’s capital budget.
