Saugeen Shores has launched a beach wheelchair program.
The Town says Water Wheels floating wheelchairs are now available at select beaches. Water wheels are a floating three-wheeled beach buggy chair. Adults and children can use them.
You can can book the free wheelchairs through the Town’s website for by using the QR code available at the two rental locations. One is located at 1 Beach Road in Southampton (Gerry’s Fries area) and the other is at the Port Elgin Harbour office.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says in a statement, “Saugeen Shores is continually looking to provide equal access to its amenities and facilities for residents and visitors, regardless of age or ability,” adding, “These floating wheelchairs, alongside our mobility mats, help ensure that everyone has the chance to enjoy our beautiful Lake Huron waters.”
The Town says daily loans of the WaterWheels floating wheelchairs will be available until Labour Day. There are two booking periods available per day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. People can also can book the wheelchair for two consecutive periods when available.
Wheelchair access beach mats (Mobi-Mats) can be found at each location to assist with mobility to the water.
Accessible parking, beach access, and washrooms are available at each location.
