March 22, 1945 – November 19, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Roy Dawn announces his peaceful passing on November 19, 2024 at the age of 79 at the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital.
Born in Collingwood Township on March 22, 1945, Roy was the son of the late Lawrence and Laura (nee Armstrong) Dawn.
Roy will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 57 years, Bonnie (nee Ottewell) Dawn.
Roy was the loving and caring father of Stacey (Kevin), Robin (Dave) and Jeff (Tammy), and was predeceased by an infant son, Dennis. He was the understanding and fun-loving Poppa of Coralyn (Beau), Delaney, Payton, Miranda, Tyler, Renayla and Keegan. Roy will be dearly missed by his sisters Audrey (late Lorne) and Wilma (John) and was predeceased by brothers Ivan, Alan and Barry (late Linda) and by sisters Shirley (Sam Roberts) and Doreen (Laurie Wickens). He will be remembered fondly by his many brother and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews and their families.
Roy married his soulmate and love of his life, Bonnie, in 1967. They lived in Collingwood for a few years and then settled in Rob Roy in 1970 to raise a family of their own.
Roy entered the workforce at the age of 16. He worked in the construction industry for the first few years and then completed a welding course in 1965. He loved working with big equipment and machinery, motors and torches. He continued to work as a welder, within the construction industry, over the next 50 years, at the Collingwood Shipyards and Walker Aggregate. Out of obligation, Roy was a hard-working and dedicated employee.
Out of passion, Roy was a family man! Family meant everything to Roy. He was so proud of his wife, his kids and his grandkids. He was always there to help out or talk to any family member that needed him.
In his spare time …Roy had a passion for cars, trucks and motors, whether it was driving them, looking at them or fixing them. He has a particular soft spot for 1956 Crown Victorias. Roy loved camping, getting fresh air and enjoying the simple life. Bonnie would have the trailer packed for Friday afternoons and the family would head away for the weekend.
Roy adored dogs. He always formed a close bond with his large breed four legged friends. Roy was an avid walker and therefore dogs adored him as well! He probably walked as many miles along the roads of Rob Roy as many people put on a vehicle.
In his later years, with declining mobility, Roy was gifted a deck by his grandkids. He would sit outside for hours and to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, listening to the wind chimes and watching the traffic and birds.
Roy enjoyed an incredible life and will forever be remembered by those he touched. He inspired those around him with his quiet humility, genuine care and welcoming demeanour. He entertained others with his enthusiasm, openness to who he was and his quirky sense of humour.
A private family service will be conducted at the Ferguson Funeral Home, followed by a service of committal and interment at Thornbury-Clarksburg Union Cemetery. All are welcome to gather at the Beaver Valley Community Centre to Celebrate Roy’s Life on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 1 until 4 p.m.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Feversham Kinsmen (cheques only please) or the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
