Catherine Anne ‘Cay’ Fraser (nee Ormsby) passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 79, with family by her side, at Grey Bruce Hospice – Chapman House in Owen Sound.
Cay was born and raised in the Meaford area. She graduated from Teacher’s College in Stratford and after teaching for a few years in Owen Sound and Flesherton, she married the love of her life, Don Fraser. She retired from teaching to become a full-time mother and partner to Don on the farm in Proton Township. After spending a number of years raising her family and tending to the farm, Cay moved on to the Shelburne Veterinarian Clinic where she enjoyed spending time with the clients and animals. Don & Cay sold the farm in Proton in 2008 to build their dream home and begin a new chapter of their life in the area where Cay grew up outside of Meaford. She was an avid volunteer to many organizations such as Dundalk District Agricultural Society, WMS, Ladies Aid, an Elder and Sunday School Teacher at Erskine Presbyterian Church (Dundalk) and a Sunday School Teacher at Knox Presbyterian Church (Meaford). She loved to garden, crochet, bake, and spend time with family and friends. She adored spending quality time with her grandchildren, watching them grow up, attending their endless sporting activities and witnessing their many milestones.
In her later years she looked forward to watching the Owen Sound Attack, attending church, and spending time at Day Away. A special thank you to the staff for their patience, attentive care, and the way they engaged Cay in the program over the last few years.
Cay’s motto in life was “There is always someone worse off than you”. This was something her mother had shared with her as a little girl and Cay lived by it. Even through her battle with cancer, and the aftereffects of her stroke, she held her head up strong and never let any of it get the best of her.
Cay will be forever cherished by her loving husband, Don Fraser of 57 years. She was the loving and caring mother to sons Blair (Connie Ingram) Fraser and Brent (Kathy Freeman) Fraser. Predeceased by her infant daughter Jennifer Fraser. She was the kind and devoted grandmother of Lauren, Aaron, Ella and Bre.
Cay was the daughter of the late Otto and Rhoda (nee Alcock) Ormsby of Meaford and daughter-in-law to the late Ken & Elva (Hendry) Fraser of Dundalk. She will be dearly missed by her sister Helen Woodhouse, brother Leonard (Debbie) Ormsby, sisters-in-law Marie Ormsby and Maxine Scott, and brothers-in-law Howard Fligg, Ray Walter and Harvey (Terry) Fraser. Predeceased by siblings Doug Ormsby and Evelyn Fligg, sister-in-law Margaret Walter and brothers-in-law Russell McCutcheon, Bruce Woodhouse, and Bob Scott. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and their families.
A special thank you to the staff at both the Meaford General Hospital and the Victoria Hospital in London for their care during her stay. A heartfelt thank you to the staff and volunteers at Grey Bruce Hospice – Chapman House in Owen Sound for their professional guidance and passionate care.
Cay’s family will receive friends for visitation at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Thursday, November 28, 2024 from 5 until 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 11 o’clock with a reception following.
