It is with sadness and joy that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather and great-grandfather Donald Christopher Shoefly born August 14th, 1938. Don began his journey to the spirit world in his 84th year at Summit Place, Owen Sound in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 15th 2023, fighting to the end.
Father to Dawn King (Manson baa) Mary Ann Shoefly and Lesley Shoefly-Kyte (Martin). Grandfather to Joshua (Cyndi) Patrick, Katelyn and Nahanni, Great-Grandfather to Tempest, Torren and Turner. Brother to Art Shoflay (Laura) Harriet Clarke (Alan baa), Juanita Rennie, Ella May Kingston (Terry), Harry Johnson, Telford Elliott, George Elliott and Velma Nadjiwon-Elliott (Ron baa).
Predeceased by brother Joseph Shoflay (baa) and sisters Margaret Fox (baa) and Anita Johnston (baa).
Don lived a hard life and was a fixture in the town of Wiarton where he resided most of his life. In his later years he could be seen walking his daily route weaving his way through the downtown, stopping to chat, yell or cuss at those he encountered depending on his mood that day. He was a proud iron worker and was quite notorious in the welding community as someone who produced great work and who stood up for himself, not to be pushed around. The dementia that Don suffered from both took and gave opportunities to his family to find peace and reconciliation with a man who loved his family but who couldn’t always express his feelings in the best of ways.
In keeping with Don’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Thomas C. Whitcroft Peninsula Chapel 272 Berford St., Wiarton (519-534-5341), on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 1 pm, with visitation 2 hours prior to service time, from 11 am to 1 pm.
Donations to the Maadookii Seniors Group would be appreciated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whitcroftfuneralhome.com
