Elgin Ray Warrilow passed away peacefully at his home on Friday August 5th at the age of 96. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Robertson). Elgin was the last of his generation of Warrilows – predeceased by his parents John and Mabel (Carnahan) and siblings, Jacqueline Morrow, John, Olive Morrow, Marguerite Radbourne and Percy.
He is survived by his sons and daughters, Brian (Janice) of Owen Sound, Doug (Maria) of Scotts Valley, California, Paula Thorn (Bradley) of Algonquin Highlands, Ontario and Donna Alton (Richard Rosenblatt) of Fort Myers, Florida. He is sadly missed by grandchildren Ivy-Lea Lunau of Ottawa, Tim (Stephanie) of Owen Sound, Gracie (Tyler) Suddeth of Winter Park, Florida, Riva of San Francisco, Adam (Cassie) Thorn of Algonquin Highlands and Carla, predeceased of Toronto, and great-grandchildren Brett and Lila of Owen Sound, Hayden and Fallon Thorn of Algonquin Highlands and Reece Suddeth of Winter Park. He was a loving uncle and great uncle to many nephews and nieces. He will be missed by his dear friend, Audrey Cheadle.
As a young man, Elgin served the Royal Canadian Airforce as an aircraft mechanic at the training airfield in Goderich, Ontario. Following the war, he became a skilled electrician working with Fitter Electric, earning the moniker amongst family and friends of Mr. Fixit. To meet the needs of a growing family, Elgin returned to school to become a high school teacher in 1958. He was a dedicated teacher at O.S.C.V.I for over 25 years.
Elgin enjoyed traveling the world with the love of his life, Shirley. He enjoyed years of curling, golfing and designing and creating hand-crafted furniture. He was an active supporter of local amateur softball and hockey. He was an avid hockey fan, attending many games. Elgin was proud of his family and believed in giving back to his community.
Please join the Warrilow family to share stories and memories at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 – 14th Street West, Owen Sound N4K 3X8 (519-376-7492) on Saturday August 13, 2022 for a Celebration of Elgin’s Life at 3 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior. The family will proceed thereafter to Greenwood Cemetery for Committal. The family requests friends to be diligent with COVID precautions and wear a face covering during the visitation and service. The service will be live streamed for anyone unable to attend.
